Swinford native appointed President of Connacht Rugby
Rugby: Swinford native Tom Horkan has been appointed President of Connacht Rugby.
A long-time contributor to the game in the province, Tom takes over from Gort’s Robert Lahiff.
A retired community garda now living in Aughrim, Galway, he has been closely involved in rugby in Connacht for decades, particularly through the Association of Referees Connacht Branch.
He has been a referee at AIL level and served as a touch judge in Heineken Cup games under renowned referee Alain Rolland.
He has worked extensively in the development and support of referees and grassroots rugby across the province.
While stationed in different locations, he has been involved with clubs such as Dunmore, Mountbellew, Ballinasloe and Buccaneers.
His appointment to the presidency marks recognition of that contribution at provincial level.
Tom is a native of Davitt Place in Swinford. His late father, Louis, was a well-known businessman in the town, while his late mother, Claire, was a teacher.
He is married to Siobhán and they have four children – Brian, Aoife, Seán and Daire.
Tom is also a passionate Mayo GAA supporter.
