A Republic of Ireland international legend paid a visit to a Mayo League soccer club last week.
Shay Given came to Carne Nash, the home of Iorras Aontaithe/Erris United last Friday to meet the club’s academy coaches and meet their young players.
It was a big surprise for the youngsters and their coaches alike. Shay also viewed the club’s facilities and was said to be very impressed by what he saw at Carne Nash.
Given, a native of Lifford, Co Donegal was the long-term starting goalkeeper for Ireland over his 20-year-long international career and is the second-highest capped player for Ireland with 134 appearances.
He began his club career with Blackburn and was best known for a 12-year stint as the number one at Newcastle United where he was twice named on the PFA Team of the Year. He also played for Swindon Town, Sunderland, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Middlesborough and Stoke City.
