Athletics: Mayo AC runners performed brilliantly in the 44th Dublin City Marathon on Bank Holiday Sunday, October 26. They enjoyed good running conditions, despite cool temperatures of eight to ten degrees and a fresh breeze with rain at times.
Over 20 of Mayo AC’s 32 participants were in the first wave of runners from the start at Leeson Street Lower, and were soon making their way through the initial miles and tackling the challenging incline of Chesterfield Avenue in the Phoenix Park. The remainder were in waves two and three, starting at intervals.
Andrew Hayes led Mayo AC's first finishers across the finish line in 2:57.16, ahead of a group of four who also finished in under three hours.
Colette Tuohy (W55) was once again the first Mayo woman finisher in 3:14.20 – a wonderful run by one of the club's most consistent winners. She was deservedly rewarded with a national bronze in her category.
Mary Browne was Mayo AC’s other national medal winner with bronze at W65 level in 3:58.44.
There were brilliant new PBs for a number of runners including Damien Finnegan (M40) 3:14.40 and Art Maguire (M40) 3:14.29. Michelle McAlpine (W45) was also among those with a new marathon PB, reaching halfway in 1:52.21 and finishing in 3:44.10.
Mairéad Bristow was also delighted with her run. Her 3:47.53 finish was nine minutes faster her previous Dublin Marathon in 2023.
Two new members also had very creditable performances – Eoin McGreal in 3:38.01 and Tom Ward in 3:31.51.
Overall, the 44th Dublin City Marathon proved to be a memorable event for the club, filled with personal achievements and a testament to the dedicated training and hard work of all of participants. There were many outstanding performances and all 32 finishers are winners in this tough endurance test.
The club extends a huge thanks to the Dublin Marathon supporters: their enthusiasm and encouragement inspired Mayo AC participants all along the 26.2 miles.
