Mayo club receive update on FAI Junior Cup appeal

There has been twists and turns in Castlebar Celtic’s appeal to the Football Association of Ireland over their FAI Junior Cup exit last month.

Celtic initially objected to the result on the grounds that Villa FC of Waterford allegedly fielded a player that played in a League of Ireland competition after the FAI Junior Cup had begun, which would deem a player ineligible to play.

The club have been successful in their appeal, which was heard last week. As a result, Villa are set to be knocked out of the competition and Celtic will play Salthill Devon in the FAI Junior Cup quarter-final, a game where Celtic will have home advantage.

According to the Football Association of Ireland Junior Challenge Cup Competition Rules 2024/2025, on the grounds of eligibility, Rule 13.2 states that ‘A player who has played in the FAI Senior Cup with a League of Ireland Premier or First Division team during the season of this competition is not eligible to participate in the FAI Junior Cup’.

However, the Western People understands that Villa are set to counter appeal the verdict, with the remaining quarter-final now set for further delays.
