Golf: Ballyhaunis golfer John William Burke gave a superb account of himself at the Flogas Irish Boys’ Amateur Open Championship, finishing in a tie for fourth place at Malone Golf Club in Belfast.

Burke entered the final round five shots off the leader Harry O’Hara but posted a final round of 69, which was five strokes better than O’Hara on the day. Trouble was for the Mayo teenager however, that Luke Furlong from Wexford produced an even better performance on the final day, with his and John Moran’s rounds of 67 sending them a playoff, with Furling just getting the better of his Portmarnock opponent to take the title on -1.

John William Burke’s posted rounds of 71 and 72 on the opening two days, with his 69 on the Sunday leaving him two over par for the tournament.

Fellow Mayo golfers Max Humphreys (Ballinrobe) and Brian Lynskey (Westport) also featured in the competition but neither made the cut after the first two rounds.
