Mayo athlete in hunt for top award

Mayo athlete Oisin Joyce has been shortlisted for one of the top accolades at next month’s 123.ie National Athletics Awards. The Lake District clubman is one of four nominees for U20 Athlete of the Year.
Joyce won a bronze medal in the javelin at last month’s World U20 Championships in Peru and has been shortlisted alongside Fintan Dewhirst, Elizabeth Ndudi and Thomas Williams.
400m hurdler Dewhirst, who competes for Tir Chonaill AC, also featured at the World U20 Championships, Dubliner Ndudi broke the Irish long jump record this year while Williams, still only 16, won gold in the hammer at the European U18 Athletics Championships.
The 123.ie National Athletics Awards are to take place on Wednesday, November 20 at the Crown Plaza Hotel, Santry.
US-born shot putter Eric Favors, whose grandmother is a native of Ballina, is one of four shortlisted for Field Athlete of the Year.
