TG4 delves into history of Mayo GAA trophies

Mayo GAA secretary Ronan Kirrane with TG4 presenter Gráinne McElwain and the famed O'Mara Cup.

The stories behind the naming of some of the most famous trophies in Mayo GAA are to be told in a brand new documentary as part of the Scéalta na gCorn series on TG4. Returning for a third season this spring, the six-part series will air weekly from this Thursday, April 17 at 8pm.

Presented by Gráinne McElwain, Scéalta na gCorn (Silverware Stories) brings viewers on a journey across the country to uncover the remarkable stories behind some of the most treasured trophies in Gaelic games. From cups named after historic Irish patriots to more recent legends of the GAA, each episode offers a unique insight into the people and communities who have shaped the games we love.

Episode 5 will see the green and red of Mayo come into focus as Gráinne learns about the Paddy Moclair Cup – named after the county’s 1936 All-Ireland hero. She also travels to Breaffy, home of the current All-Ireland rounders champions, to discover the story behind a trophy named for former Taoiseach Charles Haughey. In Claremorris, she uncovers the history of the O’Mara Cup and its connection to the local bacon factory.

Similar stories will be told in other episodes about counties Armagh, Meath, Carlow, Limerick and Derry as Gráinne McElwain meets the families, friends, and club members who keep these stories alive. She explores the legacy of the names behind the silverware – and the deep pride felt by those who play for them. It’s a heartwarming and inspiring celebration of local heroes, community spirit, and the legacy carried by GAA silverware across Ireland.
