East Mayo pride was on the line on Sunday morning as Kilmovee Shamrocks got their AbbVie Mayo LGFA Senior Championship campaign off to a flying start, emerging 2-14 to 2-8 victors over near-neighbours Charlestown in a local derby that delivered plenty of bite right down to the final whistle.

The home side laid the foundations for their victory during a dominant opening period, with their lethal attacking trio of Shauna Golden, Lisa Cafferkey, and Sinead Cafferkey proving a constant thorn in the Charlestown defence. Golden set the tone straight from the throw-in, driving forward to notch the game's opening point.

Kilmovee could have put the game out of reach even earlier had the woodwork not come to Charlestown’s rescue—most notably when a goalbound effort from Lisa Cafferkey rattled the post, one of almost half a dozen first-half attempts from the hosts to crash off the framing.

Undeterred, Lisa Cafferky quickly doubled the advantage from play on five minutes before stroking over a placed ball to extend the lead to three. Ava Mai Casey got Charlestown off the mark with a converted free, but the momentum remained firmly with the Shamrocks.

Sinead Cafferky soon took centre stage, kicking five superb first-half points, while Lisa added two more to push the hosts 0-8 to 0-3 clear. Charlestown fought back admirably late in the half, with Casey tagging on two more white flags alongside a fine effort from Cailín Durkan to trim the deficit to 0-8 to 0-5 at the break.

If Charlestown harboured hopes of a second-half turnaround, Kilmovee crushed them within two minutes of the restart. Sinead Cafferky produced a trademark powerful run straight through the heart of the Charlestown defence before slamming the ball to the net for the opening goal of the contest.

From there, the white flags flowed for the home side. Sinead Cafferky, the indefatigable Golden, Leah McHugh, and Saerlaith Dillon all raised scores during a devastating purple patch. When Lisa Cafferky finished off Kilmovee’s second goal to make it 2-11 to 0-7 with 17 minutes left on the clock, the outcome seemed beyond doubt to all in attendance.

To Charlestown's credit, they refused to surrender. Substitute Siofra McGuinness injected major life into their attack, raiding for two goals—including a coolly taken penalty to ensure the scoreline reflected a far tighter battle by the time the final whistle blew.

Ultimately, Kilmovee will be thrilled to take local bragging rights and maximum points, laying down a major marker of intent for the championship ahead. For Charlestown, while their late fighting spirit will provide encouragement, they know an elevated performance will be required if they are to navigate their way out of a demanding group.
