Six-goal Castlebar show Rehins their ruthless streak
The boys of Castlebar Primary NS celebrate following their Division 1B victory over Rehins NS last Wednesday.
You wondered not how Castlebar had won this game but how they had won by so much, as the unfortunate boys of Rehins experienced little fortune in front of the posts in last Wednesday’s showdown at the county ground.
Castlebar, as the scoreline indicates, were outstanding, with the exceptional corner-forward play of Owen Maughan and Nathan Joyce worth the entry fee alone. However, their opponents were luckless in their attempt to stay in the hunt for silverware, with Rehins’ gallant midfielder Petey Maughan in particular taking the fight to Castlebar right up until the final whistle.
Petey Maughan’s powerful shot for goal in the third minute had drawn an excellent save from Elijah Kirby while he unleashed a ferocious shot into the top left corner in the 10th minute, only for referee Kevin Connelly to correctly disallow the score because of an over-carry.
Castlebar already had 2-3 on the board at that stage, with points by Owen Maughan, two, and Nathan Joyce preceding goals by Harrison Flanagan and Pierce Nestor. Flanagan’s was a free that dropped into the net while Nestor had been unselfishly set-up by Joyce who hand-passed across the goalmouth.
Owen Maughan and Aaron Liddy had kicked further Castlebar points by the time Petey Maughan received a quickly taken free by Adam Gallagher and drilled over Rehins’ opening – and only – point of the half, after which Castlebar struck a further goal and three points.
The sublime Owen Maughan delivered two of the singles and Casey Concannon the other, with the latter, who was rock solid at the heart of the defence, kicked long into Nathan Joyce who caught and turned to drill home the major, which saw the county town boys lead 3-8 to 0-1 at the interval.
The breeze was at the backs of Rehins after half-time and they made a bright start to the new half, securing points through frees by Petey Maughan and Adam Gallagher. However, a trio of quickfire wides stunted their progress and Castlebar eventually got back into their scoring groove, with Joyce and Nestor picking off their side’s opening points of the half.
An inspirational cameo by Willie B Maughan saw the defender launch himself forward to score a pair of goals for Rehins in the 30th and 35th minutes, in between which Petey Maughan had a goal attempt scooped off the line by Concannon, who would later do exactly the same to foil Willie B from grabbing his hat-trick.
At the other end, Owen Maughan struck his own brace of goals, while a sixth Castlebar goal, scored by Gurnoordeep Singh, allied with points by Maughan, Joyce and Eze Eziefula, padded out a very comfortable victory.
