Roscommon condemn Mayo to more Connacht final heartbreak
Mayo endured more final heartache in Tuam Stadium as Georgia Gerrity’s late point secured Roscommon the Connacht minor title this afternoon.
Roscommon were quickest out the blocks, scoring the first four points of the game through Laura Glennon (two), Aoife Creevy and Georgia Gerrity, but Mayo were back level by the 12th minute thanks to a pair of Saerlaith Dillon efforts and one each from Kasey Ruane and Aoife Meaney.
The Rossies would strike back with 1-1, the goal coming as Georgia Gerrity’s ‘garryowen’ fell kindly to Vivienne Gannon, who got the better of Mayo goalkeeper Kayla Hughes to palm it into the net.
That major would be the difference between the two at half-time, with Mayo trailing 1-7 to 0-7, their final three points in the half coming from Meaney and two singles from Emily Duffy.
Mayo dominated possession in the early stages of the second half but could not translate that onto the scoreboard.
Roscommon got the opening score of the half before Kate Byrne levelled the game with 1-1, the goal a point attempt that dipped into the net.
The sides shared two points apiece in the final quarter as extra-time loomed, but Roscommon worked the ball patiently to set up Gerrity for what would be the championship-winning point.
