Moy boys leapfrog Holly-Carra off the bottom
Brian Reape scored 2-1-2 in an important win for Moy Davitts against Hollymount-Carramore.
A blistering start to the second-half by Moy Davitts, where they hit two goals inside 60 seconds, proved to be the decisive moment in this bottom-of-the-table clash at a cold Hollymount on Saturday. The sides were all square at the interval, 0-10 to 1-7, and an exciting second 30 minutes lay in store, or at least that’s what everyone present thought. However, goals in the third and fourth minutes after the resumption from Padraig Ruane and Conor Reid, along with Hollymount being reduced to 14-men, swung this game in Moy Davitts’ favour and they were never threatened from hereon.
Brian Reape displayed once again his immense talents, where he registered 2-4 in total, all from play. While his side may still occupy one of the bottom two places in the league standings, the momentum is clearly turning in their favour, making it now back-to-back wins for the East Mayo side.
“This is a good win for us and a win we needed after the first four games we had,” a happy Moy Davitts selector Brian Lawlor told the Western People afterwards. “We are now looking for more consistency in our performances and overall, I feel we are getting that at the moment. The work-rate of our players was very decent here this evening and we took some of our chances really well out there. We did leave a small bit behind us in the first-half, including several goal chances, but our work-rate in the second-half was so much better.
“When they went down to fourteen, I thought we managed the game very well. We set up and took advantage of the extra man. They left a couple of frees behind them, they were decent enough, but I thought we just had that little bit more in attack and sharpness upfront than they did, and it told in the end.” While the scores may have been level at the break, all the talk in the stand during the interval was about how Moy Davitts did not have four or five goals on the scoreboard. Padraig Ruane and Ronan Clarke came within centimetres, hitting the frame of the goal twice, but Holly-Carra survived in their first league game since ace forward Matthew Morris departed for the US for the summer months.
A well-worked goal from the stand side did result in Moy Davitts’ opening goal in the 12th minute from the boot of Brian Reape, and he also added four points, including a two-pointer, all from play. Ronan Clarke in the corner was also on top of his game, adding three points, including a free, with David Byrne also among the scorers. For the home side, they produced their best period in the second quarter but Darren Coen was solid throughout the opening 30 minutes, accounting for six of his side's ten points, including a two-point free in the closing stages. Jack Keane kicked a two-pointer from midfield, along with the lively Finian Walsh adding two from play to keep his side in touch. However, that was as good as it would get for the hosts.
They conceded a soft goal after the resumption when Padraig Ruane’s ball into the goalmouth looked to be no danger but to everyone’s surprise somehow found its way past Niall Campbell. There was nothing Campbell could do about Conor Reid’s strike moments later, a blistering strike into the roof of the net, and to make matters even worse the home side were reduced to fourteen players soon after, when substitute Barry Sheridan was shown a straight red for an off-the-ball incident.
Nathan Moran did goal for Hollymount-Carramore midway through the half but Moy Davitts coasted home to victory from here with Brian Reape getting his second goal, followed by points from Reape again, Ryan Kenny and Oisin McHugh, sealing an eight points win.
“Thankfully we are getting bodies back, the team is changing from week to week, so with this we are building momentum and now just looking for consistency more than anything else,” continued Brian Lawlor. “Most of the games are now being won in the middle third of the field and the breaking ball in that area is now a massive component of the game. We are trying to come up with a plan to break even in every game in this area and once you do, you have a very decent chance of winning any game.”
