Mitchels camogie go goal crazy in big win
Castlebar Mitchels had an emphatic win over Liam Mellows in the Galway Junior B 12-a-side camogie championship..
Castlebar Mitchels produced a commanding performance last Sunday afternoon, powering to a comprehensive victory over Liam Mellows in Round 3 of the Galway Junior ‘B’ 12-a-side camogie championship.
Both sides traded points in the opening ten minutes in an evenly matched display before Rachel Peoples broke the deadlock, finding the back of the net for her first of four goals on the day. From there, Mitchels began to take control, with points from Hannah Hauttmann, Kaitlyn McNally and Brona Joyce.
It wasn’t all plain sailing, however, as Liam Mellows kept in contention with a rally of points. Mitchels inside line continued to cause problems, though, and Marie Beirne and Rachel Peoples both hit the back of the net as the away team began to pull away. Mitchels went into the interval with a 3-8 to 0-7 lead.
Liam Mellows had an opportunity to reduce the deficit early in the second half when they were awarded a penalty. However, Treasa Conway remained focused and stood tall in the Mitchels goal producing an excellent save to deny the Galway side and keep Mitchels firmly in control.
Captain Ella Deely held a defensive role in midfield, which allowed Clodagh Quinn and Aisling Dooley to make some excellent darting runs forward from the half-back line. Making her adult debut in midfield, Niamh Curran put in a tireless performance, showing plenty of composure on her first appearance at Junior level.
As the clock ticked on, fresh legs were introduced, with Kaitlyn McNally making way for Eadaoin Egan on 35mins. Another adult debutant, Egan certainly made her mark, making a darting run inside before finding Marie Beirne unmarked, who fired seamlessly over the bar.
Mitchels continued to press forward, with Brona Joyce, Rachel Peoples and Hannah Hauttmann adding further scores. Hauttmann made way for Fiona Duffy in the 43rd minute, who got the last goal of the game as the final whistle blew, to complete an empathic 27-point victory.
It was an impressive all-round team performance from Castlebar Mitchels with the attacking firepower complemented by a solid defensive performance. With one final round game remaining on the weekend of September 19/20, Mitchels will be hoping this result is enough to secure their place in the semi-finals.
