History was made on Saturday by the London senior football team when their impressive five points victory away to Carlow meant the Exiles had secured their highest ever number of points in a National Football League campaign. And there’s still one round to go!
London, who are to host Mayo in the opening round of the Connacht SFC next month, led from start to finish against a Carlow side who are top of the Division 4 standings. It finished in Dr Cullen Park 1-20 to 0-18 in favour of Michael Maher’s side.
It was their third win of the campaign having also drawn one game.
Former Charlestown Sarsfields defender Conor O’Donoghue has been an ever present in the London team this season and featured at left half-back on Saturday while Swinford native Stephen Henry had been selected to start at right corner-back but took his place among the substitutes instead alongside Bonniconlon’s Ciaran Gaughan.
London have given themselves a real chance of promotion to Division 3. They now sit joint second in the table on seven points, level with Longford, who are managed by Ballaghaderreen’s Mike Solan, and one point behind Carlow. Their final round match next Sunday is away to Antrim.
London could even have been in a far stronger position had they not surrendered a 10 points lead when losing at home to Leitrim in an earlier round.
