Mayo girls feature in historic game in Dublin

The Mayo team who took on Dublin in Saturday's historic first-ever game in the All-Ireland LGFA Under-20 Football Championship.

Their opening bow did not go according to plan on the scoreboard against an accomplished Dublin side on Saturday last, but there were enough positives in Mayo’s historic first outing in the All-Ireland Under 20 Ladies Football Championship to suggest there is plenty still to play for this season.

With Galway, Meath and Cork all to come before the end of June, Mayo’s campaign is far from defined by one result, even if Dublin’s 15 points victory (4-10 to 0-7) offered a tough first-day lesson.

Mayo will have a chance to make amends when they face Galway in Round 2 of the All-Ireland Under 20 Ladies Football Championship in Swinford next Saturday at 2pm. Galway will arrive in Swinford buoyed by a strong opening performance after defeating Meath by 2-14 to 1-8 on home soil at Tuam Stadium on Saturday.

Against Dublin, Mayo actually began brightly and showed composure in the early stages of this landmark fixture and only trailed 1-5 to 0-4 at half-time.

The All-Ireland Under 20 Ladies Football Championship has been introduced by the LGFA as a new developmental competition aimed at preparing players for senior inter-county football.
