Mayo GAA tax liability is a ‘legacy issue’

Mayo GAA treasurer Valerie Murphy.
At this afternoon’s Mayo GAA County Convention, treasurer Valerie Murphy addressed recent media reports regarding a tax liability of almost €120,000 that Mayo GAA are carrying on their balance sheet.
In the notes to the financial statements, contained in the audited accounts which have already been distributed to clubs, €119,778 is recorded as being payable to creditors under “taxation” in 2023. Just €7,078 was owed for PAYE and related charges in 2022.
In a statement, Ms Murphy said that the liability was in relation a legacy issue regarding the payment of Cul Camps wages from a number of years ago.
She said the County Board has made a voluntary disclosure to Revenue that makes up part of the PAYE and related charges reflected in the financial statement.
She said the Board is tax compliant and that this is currently a live case with Revenue. Ms Murphy said she would not speak in detail on this matter but said she would disclose the outcome of the case to delegates once it has been settled with Revenue.
Mayo GAA’s overall expenditure for 2023 was around 3.2 million and the total income was just over €4 million, giving a surplus of around €776,000.
