Forward power sends Shamrocks into semis
Sinead Cafferky and Ava Horgan give a thumbs up to their side's qualification for the Mayo LGFA Senior Championship semi-finals.
Kilmovee Shamrocks booked their place in the knockout stages of the AbbVie Mayo LGFA Senior Championship after producing an impressive attacking display to overcome Castlebar Mitchels at Swinford Amenity Park on Sunday afternoon.
Kilmovee, who finished second to Westport in their group, were in control for large periods, with their attacking movement and finishing proving decisive as they ran up an impressive score of 4-20.
Sinead Cafferky opened the scoring inside the first minute before her sister Lisa doubled Kilmovee's advantage four minutes later. Shauna Golden then added another point before Castlebar got off the mark through Grainne Flynn.
Lisa Cafferky helped to continue Kilmovee's early momentum with another score before Saerlaith Dillon added a further point for Shamrocks who began to build a significant lead.
Kilmovee found the net for the first time when Tori Duffy finished into the top corner; Mitchels goalkeeper Ava Scully had managed to get her fingertips to the ball but just could not keep it out.
Duffy added a point shortly afterwards, likewise there was another apiece by the Cafferky sisters before Saerlaith Dillon added two more points to further stretch out Kilmovee’s advantage.
Castlebar needed a response and got one through Suzanne Tuohy, who produced an excellent finish when she lobbed the Kilmovee goalkeeper to find the back of the net. Lucy Molloy followed with a point as Castlebar attempted to stay in touch. However, Kilmovee continued to threaten at the other end and carried a commanding2-11 to 1-3 lead into the interval, aided by the first of two goals in the game by Lisa Cafferky.
Nor was there any let up from the East Mayo side after the restart, with Golden quickly adding to her tally.
Kathryn Sullivan landed a point for Mitchels but Golden continued to influence proceedings and added another point before converting a free, while Saerlaith Dillon also found the target as Kilmovee kept Castlebar at arm’s length.
Castlebar did manage their only two-point score of the afternoon when Flynn converted a free from outside the arc, but Kilmovee quickly responded as Golden, Lucia McDonnell, Sinead Cafferky and Dillon all added to the scoreboard.
Flynn and Molloy continued to battle for Castlebar and both added late scores, but Kilmovee had too much attacking power for their opponents to contain.
The Green and Gold finished strongly, with Shauna Golden finding the net late in the game before Lisa Cafferky also added another major to put further gloss on the result.
Sinead Cafferky added the final Kilmovee score as they completed a convincing victory.
While Castlebar battled hard throughout and continued to look for openings, Kilmovee's ability to create chances and convert them ultimately proved the difference between the sides.
The result sees Kilmovee progress to the knockout stages after finishing second in the group while Castlebar now face a relegation play-off, with their senior status for 2027 on the line.
For Kilmovee, it was an afternoon where their attacking players shared the scoring responsibility and consistently caused problems, with the excellent Saerlaith Dillon, the Cafferky sisters, Shauna Golden and Tori Duffy all playing important roles in a comprehensive win.
