Five-star West’ are best again
The Westport squad celebrate winning the 2026 Galway Junior 'B' 15-a-side championship.
Westport continued their climb through the Galway Camogie ranks as they secured back-to-back county titles, overcoming Mullagh to be crowned Junior ‘B’ 15-a-side champions on Saturday in Kilconieron.
Westport made the brighter start, registering three unanswered points through Christina McEvily, Meabh Tunney and Amy Murray. Emma Briscoe and Leanne Fahy got Mullagh on the scoreboard, leaving just a point between the sides approaching the midway point of the half.
Both sides missed opportunities, but once Westport got their running game going, they began to take control, hitting three unanswered goals. Two goals from player of the game Lisa Scahill and one from McEvily left Westport firmly in the driving seat at 3-3 to 0-2.
Mullagh responded through a goal from Shauna Coen, while Briscoe added a point to reduce the deficit. However, Westport maintained their advantage, heading into the break with a 3-3 to 1-3 lead.
Westport picked up where they left off after the restart, scoring 1-3 without reply. Scahill and Murray converted frees, Tunney added a point from play, and Scahill completed her hat-trick of goals to give Westport a commanding twelve-point lead.
Briscoe struck Mullagh’s second goal of the afternoon around the midway point of the half, but Westport quickly responded. Scahill found the net for the fourth time, while Áine Regan added a well-taken point from play to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
Briscoe registered another score for Mullagh, but Scahill converted a free before Fionnuala McLoughlin added a point from play, extending Westport’s lead to fourteen points as the game entered its closing stages.
Coen added two late frees for Mullagh, but the gap proved too great to bridge. Westport held firm to claim an emphatic victory.
