Fenton on the double for victorious Davitts
Fenton Kelly scored two goals for Davitts in their win away to Hollymount-Carramore.
Hollymount was the venue for this Division 2 tie on Saturday evening with the visitors, more clinical in attack, taking the two league points on offer, thanks in large part to a pair of second-half goals by Fenton Kelly.
A tricky swirling wind made life difficult for both sets of attackers with the home side uncharacteristically wasteful, most notably in the first-half.
The lively Ciaran Treacy shot two early points for Davitts with his brother Shane adding a third in the 13th minute and it wasn’t until a minute later that Stephen Coen hit Hollymount-Carramore’s opening point of the evening.
Davitts’ energetic wing-back Tommy Waldron cancelled out that score out in the next attack but in general, the teams were finding scores hard to come by and a barren eleven minutes ended with a 26th minute Ciaran Treacy point. Matthew Morris, the home side’s most threatening forward, fired over his first score in the 28th minute which completed the first-half scoring and left Davitts leading by 0-5 to 0-2 at the interval.
Jack Melvin pointed for Davitts three minutes after the restart and three minutes later he extended his side’s lead to six points with a well-struck two-pointer. A second yellow card for Hollymount-Carramore’s Tom Morris in the 37th minute, issued for a late hit on Fenton Kelly, left his side a man short for the remainder of the contest.
The game finally burst into life in the 42nd minute when Matthew Morris hit his second point for Hollymount-Carramore. Davitts responded with a well-worked goal less than a minute later, with Sean Keadin starting a move that ended up with Liam Kearns putting Fenton Kelly through on goal, and he blasted a close range effort past a helpless Niall Campbell.
Holly-Carra’s wing-back Enda Maloney fired over a fine two-pointer in the 44th minute to keep his side in touch and while Ciaran Treacy extended Davitts lead with a 45th minute point, a minute later Matthew Morris was on hand to rifle home a fine Hollymount-Carramore goal to close the gap to four points, 1-9 to 1-5.
Stephen Coen pointed in the 51st minute but Davitts sub Niall Treacy, making a welcome return to action, found the target in the following minute. Holly-Carra were now throwing everything they had at Davitts but a resolute defence was keeping them at bay.
In the 58th minute the hosts were denied a goal after heroic defending by Conor McDermott, Brian Birmingham and Dylan O’Brien after which the ball was moved upfield by the impressive Ronan Kelly before transferring to his brother Fenton, who burst through and unleashed a fantastic left footed drive to the top corner of the net to clinch the points for Davitts.
Niall Treacy added an injury-time point and Hollymount-Carramore’s Matthew Morris fired over the last point of the match on the stroke of full-time.
Davitts work-rate all over the field was very impressive with all six defenders excelling and Cathal Corless, Fenton Kelly, Ronan Kelly, Jack Melvin and Ciaran Treacy in top form.
Hollymount-Carramore had their best performers in Dylan Jennings, Enda Maloney, Stephen Coen, Michael Sheridan, Nathan Moran and Matthew Morris.
