Mayo FC have appointed Anthony Elding as the club’s inaugural MU17 manager.
The move will be seen as a coup for the club as Elding had been interviewed last month for a League of Ireland First Division club. Chairman, Joe Faughnan, said he was ‘just delighted to get it over the line’ and that Mayo FC have got ‘a top, top quality up-and-coming coach’ at the club.
“He's been involved at Longford Town and Sligo Rovers as of this age, and I think he'll bring great experience from his own time in the game, both playing and managing. It's a really exciting group that he'll be putting together over the next few weeks, so I'm really looking forward to seeing them develop over the season, as I believe Anthony has the quality to really drive standards on and off the pitch for the lads, and really it'll be a new experience for them at this level.
“I'm looking forward to seeing how the MU17s will do next season, and I wish Antony the best of luck for the season ahead.” Elding himself said the club has ‘great aspirations for future growth, with the MU17s coming and then the MU20s before the club has a senior team in the third tier in a couple of years time.
“Mayo FC has made fantastic strides since last season, They bringing great opportunity for local players of mayo that are aspiring to play league of Ireland elite level football whilst progressing with the future of the football club,” said Elding.
“I’m a driven, passionate, forward thinking, self-motivated manager with strong leadership qualities whilst applying excellent organisation skills. I am extremely adaptable with a 100% committed attitude and professional outlook on the game.
“I have been in communication with Mayo FC chairman Joe Faughnan over the past 4 weeks and now we finally have it over the line.
“After long discussions with Joe he convinced me that with the progression of Mayo FC it’s the right time to get involved at the football club. I was keen in securing this challenging new role within this ambitious football club in which there is scope for future growth, this gives the youths great inspiration to be a part of a LOI football club that has a great ambition moving forward through the levels.” Edling recently managed Longford Town to national success at U17 level and helped produced many players into the Sligo Rovers U20 and first team.
“Over the course of the four years I’ve given near 50 players under 17 debut whether that was first time opportunity at League of Ireland level or bringing players from the 15s into the 17s.”
