Semi-final defeat for Mayo ladies in Angela Hurst Cup

Mayo's journey in the Angela Hurst Cup came to and end after a 3-0 defeat to Waterford.

The Mayo Women's League squad made the near 600 km round trip to Ballycourda in Waterford on Sunday to take on the Waterford Ladies, with a place in the Angela Hearst Cup Final at stake.

Waterford went close in the opening minute hitting the post from a corner but Mayo bounced back immediately with Melissa Devaney going close. Tracey Hall was fouled by the home keeper on 11minutes with a penalty awarded and the keeper yellow carded. She made amends with an excellent save from the spot kick.

Both Stacey Freyne and Anna McDonnell put in huge, fearless challenges to keep the home team at bay and Fiona Doherty and Beth Roache went close for Mayo. Amy Dunleavy stung the home keeper's hands and Amy Dowling demonstrated the art of one on one defending as the first half came to a conclusion at nil al Waterford went close just short of the hour with a rasping shot just over the bar. Mayo then hit a purple patch creating numerous chances primarily through Fiona Doherty but as the 2nd half water break arrived, there was still no breakthrough.

Amy Dunleavy saw her free kick clawed away and Anna Mc Donnell was denied by the replacement Waterford keeper. Mayo were then stunned with a trio of goals from Waterford in a 12-minute period from the 70th minute.

Mayo fought gamely until the bitter end going close again through Niamh Flannery but eventually lost out on a 3-0 scoreline that certainly didn't tell the whole story of the game.
