Works on the long-awaited supply of water to villages in west Mayo is set to commence in the coming weeks with the final contracts now signed.

All of the required funding for the Murrisk Community Water Connection is now in place and will service the areas of Murrisk, Lecanvey, Kilsallagh and surrounds. The problem of unclean and unsafe drinking water has been a long-standing issue in these communities.

The total contract price of the works is €8.2 million. The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has approved funding of over €6 million for the project with the remaining balance of over €2.1 million to be provided by a local contribution fund from 500 to 550 households in the area, who will be supplied by this scheme.

The news was warmly welcomed by Fine Gael Deputy Michael Ring.

“This is a very significant day for the Murrisk Community Water Connection. I look forward to seeing this project being delivered in a timely manner.”

Cllr Peter Flynn praised the hard work of the local committee who helped to bring the project to fruition.

“None of this would be possible without the dedication and work ethos of the Murrisk Water Committee who went door to door on several occasions getting over 500 people to commit to paying the connection fee and sorting all the paperwork which showed Uisce Eireann and the Government that people locally were 110% on board. I am hopeful this news means it is only a matter of time before Louisburgh is also connected to the mains.”
