Athletics: The 13th Annual Kilmovee 10k in aid of Mayo Roscommon Hospice and Kilmovee Shamrocks GAA took place last Saturday afternoon. There was a record turnout in what were good running conditions, with 368 finishers in the 10k and a further 222 in the 5k.

The winner of the 10k was Ray Hynes from Mullingar Harriers AC who crossed the line in 33:22, with Shaun McLoughlin of Westport AC second in 33:46 and Anthony Murray of Multisport Westport third in 35:43.

Also performing very well in the sunny, dry but chilly conditions was Aoibhinn Flatley from Swinford AC who was winner of the women’s race in 39:56 – she had been placed second the year before in 41:43. In the runners-up spot was Donna Gallagher in 42:17 and her Mayo AC teammate Angela O’Connor was third in 42:24.. Both Donna and Angela displayed great form again after their brilliant runs the previous Sunday at the National 10k Championships in Dunboyne.

John Byrne was first of Mayo AC’s 22 runners home, finishing fourth overall in 35:50 and winning the over-40s category. It was John’s third 10k in the space of thirteen days and underlined his excellent return to form.

Mayo AC’s other category prizewinners today were: 1st W40 Eimear Fitzmaurice 45:49, 1st W50 Colette Tuohy 44:11, Johnny Cribbin 1st M60 41:20 and Monica Joyce 1st W60 48:25.

Tuam AC’s Sean Burke won the M50 category in 36:41 while Daniel Anderson clocked 42:00 to win the Michael McDonnell Shield on behalf of St Nathy’s College, Ballaghaderreen.

In the Kilmovee 5k, Martina O’Connor was another Mayo AC prizewinner – first overall in the race in 19:31, which was also her third race in thirteen days. Second was Caitlin Hughes of Swinford AC in 20:12 while third – and first man – went to Brian Gallagher in 20:13.

As usual the event was well organised with the help of excellent support by volunteers all around the course, and at the post-race prizegiving and refreshments in the Community Centre.
