Concerns over illegal drinking at Mayo location

The area has been the site of illegal drinking

Concerns have been raised over illegal drinking at a Castlebar location close to a local school and scenic walk.

The walkway close to the Educate Together School which leads to Lough Lannagh has been the site of illegal drinking for more than a year.

The good weather of recent months has seen the issue escalate.

It is not uncommon to see groups of mostly adult men drinking at benches and seating areas.

Groups and individuals start congregating at the location before lunchtime. Empty cans and bottles are often left strewn on the ground.

A nearby location under the bridge en route to Lough Lannagh is also the site of similar activity and there have been instances of rough sleeping in the area.

Local Gardai said they have not received any formal complaints about illegal drinking at the location but have taken action against adults and teenagers who have been congregating and drinking at a multi-storey car park at Hopkins Road.

Local councillor Donna Sheridan said there is an issue in the area that requires action.

She said great work has been done in making the location more attractive and she does not want to see that undone by anti-social behaviour.

“We want to make sure this is nipped in the bud with the support of local Gardai,” said Cllr Sheridan.
