Punk rock and gigs at lunchtime in Ballina
Katie Cassidy is one of several talented local artists performing in Ballina Arts Centre fore the 'Music @ Lunchtime' series of gigs.
Following the success of the last Punk Rock Night organised by Ballina NCF, Ballina Arts Centre will once again host a night of live punk music on Saturday, June 29th. This time the evening comes with a twist as punk meets comedy.
The set includes Sean Gorman, who is billed as ‘Ballina comedy on acoustic guitar - music to stop wars….or start them!’, which should add an interesting twist to the evening.
The night will also feature Nomatrix, a punk rock trio from Athlone formed in 1997 whose new album will be released in autumn. This gig comes hot on the heels of their recent English tour.
The event will also be the first outing, in Ballina, for the new line up of Monopole, a Mayo/Sligo three-piece playing heavy dark-Prog with a punk edge.
Once again, the auditorium will be cleared of seating to leave plenty of room to mosh, and the bar will be available all evening. With doors opening at 9pm and the music continuing till 11.30, this night out is a steal at €5 for three live bands and some great entertainment. Tickets are available at the Arts Centre box office at 096-73593 or via the website.
In the meantime, the centre's Music @ Lunchtime programme of free gigs has proven to be hugely popular. The first three artists (Giuliano Gnagnatti, Gerry Ring, and Eric Barrett) attracted great crowds and got a fantastic response from the Ballina Lunchtime audiences. The programme continues through July with an eclectic mix of well-known and soon-to-be-known artists including:
June 25: David Walsh - folk guitarist, singer and member of Ballina Folk Group;
July 3rd: William Reape - up-and-coming young pianist.
July 10th: Mike Absalom - harpist, poet and bon viveur.
July 17th: Hope Gillespie - Jazz and Blues songstress.
July 24th: Katie Cassidy - singing classics and originals from her album.
July 31st: To be announced. Watch this space!
So, any Wednesday between now and the end of July, liven up your lunchtime at Ballina Arta Centre with free entertainment. Performances start at 1.15pm and end at 1.45pm sharp. Tea, coffee and wine available.
