Over 2,400 drivers caught speeding over bank holiday period

Over 2,400 drivers have been detected for speeding offences since Thursday.
An Garda Síochána's road policing operation for the May bank holiday weekend began at 7am on Thursday and will run until 7am on Tuesday.
Notable speeds detected on Sunday include:
- 96 km/h in a 50km/hr zone on the Rathmines Road Lower, Dublin 6;
- 112 km/h in a 60km/hr zone on the Navan Road, Dublin 15;
- 158 km/h in an 80km/hr zone on the R498, Inch, Borrisoleigh, Tipperary;
- 141 km/h in a 100km/hr zone on the R446, Faheeran, Moate, Offaly.
In the same four-day period, over of 240 drivers were detected for holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.
Gardaí have been conducting both statutory Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints.
As a result, a total of 123 people were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant so far.
An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) are urging all road users to support their efforts to keep them and all others on the roads safe this May bank holiday weekend.
An Garda Síochána said gardaí will be placing a particular emphasis on detecting those driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs this weekend.
