One party remains interested in purchasing historic Mayo hotel

There is just one interested party remaining as Mayo County Council seeks to sell the Imperial Hotel in Castlebar.
Castlebar councillors say they are fed up of being kept in the dark on the future of the Imperial Hotel.
It was recently reported that a hotel group is the only remaining party interested in purchasing the historic Castlebar premises where the Land League was founded in 1879.
Head of Castlebar Municipal District David Mellett told councillors that the council’s property section is involved in the negotiations. He said if something concrete materialises about the sale of the property then a workshop will be arranged with councillors.
Cllr Donna Sheridan said it is frustrating that councillors are learning of developments through the local press.
Councillors will have a say on whether or not to approve the sale of the former hotel at The Mall.
Fifteen years ago, the hotel closed and the former Castlebar Town Council bought the property for a sum of €800,000 in 2011.
Meanwhile, councillors expressed frustration that the transfer of lands at Knockaphunta from the HSE to Mayo County Council continues to drag on.
The transfer was part of a deal between the local authority and the HSE with the council providing land for the construction of the now-completed Primary Care Centre in Westport.
“What is the problem?” said an exasperated Cllr Cyril Burke. “We are years at this."
When transferred, the lands are slated to be used to develop playing pitch and sporting facilities. Cllr Burke said he fears the long delay will see the project lose out on vital capital funding.
