Work starts this month on new Mayo greenway

Construction of the first phase of the Blacksod Bay Loop Scheme in Erris is set to start this month with completion due in November, members of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District were told last week.
Engineers from Mayo Co Council confirmed that a public consultation and environmental assessment is now complete and the construction contract has been awarded.
Cllr Sean Carey said the project will be a great asset to the area and has been welcomed with enthusiasm by locals, adding: “This is a lovely part of the country to get opened up to cyclists and all as a shared space."
Cllr Gerry Coyle welcomed the consultation with people in advance and asked that the surface be tarmac and not concrete.
Members were advised that the section from Doohoma would be part of phase two of the scheme, with construction expected in the first quarter of 2026, subject to approval from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
