Water supply problems persist on Achill Island

Cllr Paul McNamara raised the issue.
An Achill councillor has said persistent problems with the island's water supply need to be prioritised by Uisce Éireann.
Cllr Paul McNamara told last week’s meeting of the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District that he raised the issue of the island’s water supply at a previous meeting and two further bursts have occurred in the interim.
“It is causing great disruption to a lot of houses, particularly in the upper part of the parish. The reservoirs are not capable of holding the storage required when there is a burst in the supply.”
In September, Cllr McNamara had called on Uisce Eireann to send representatives to hold a workshop with councillors to discuss the options available in Achill.
In a response read out at last week's meeting, Uisce Éireann said the request had been forwarded to "the relevant department" and there will be a further response in due course.
“Can we prioritise this matter and get them to a workshop?" asked Cllr McNamara. “We have work going on at the treatment plant to increase the storage capacity to a seven-hour facility when it is a 24-hour facility that is needed.
“This has been one of the main issues in my area. The households all pay their Local Property Tax and the people deserve a proper water supply,” he said.
