Volunteers are key to Mini-Marathon

Events like the Mayo.ie Western People Women’s Mini-Marathon simply would not be possible without the support of volunteers from within the community, and the Mayo public is rarely found wanting when it comes to these types of events.

Among the most committed event volunteers through the years have been Pat Boyle and Gerry McHale.

Pat has been entertaining the mini-marathon crowd with music for the past 10 years, a gig which always gives him significant pleasure.

“I have found it great,” Pat told the Western People when asked about his mini-marathon volunteering experience. “I mingle with people when they are running down the road and I do have the craic with them.

“If it is fundraising for a good cause, I will do it - no problem. Last year, the mini-marathon was brilliant in Ballina, and I’m looking forward to it coming back to Castlebar. It’s all for a great cause, which is the main thing.”

Pat and his son, Patrick, entertain the crowd by playing tunes along the route, cheering on the runners, while also enjoying a chat.

“If means a lot to make people smile. Everyone is so thankful, it’s fantastic to see people happy, and enjoy taking part in the event.”

As for Gerry McHale, he has been volunteering as Chief Steward since the early days of the women’s mini-marathon - a role he has enjoyed thoroughly.

“We aim to make sure everything goes well on the day,” Gerry told the Western People. “We have to be prepared for all eventualities. I get a great buzz from organising such a great event.”

Speaking on behalf of Mayo Sports Partnership, Ray McNamara said: “Volunteers are a huge part of the success of the mini-marathon, and a very special thank you to all volunteers who have helped out over the years.

"On the day, over 200 volunteers give up their time from local clubs and community groups to ensure that the event is delivered to the highest standards. The event would not run without the time and effort that people give to it on the May Bank Holiday Sunday, and their efforts on the day ensure that participants have the best experience possible while taking part in the event.”

Volunteers are required for: Race Steward, Security Steward, Entertainment Volunteer, Marshals, Water Station Volunteer, Administration Volunteer, Litter Control Volunteer, Sports Volunteer, Physiotherapist Volunteers and Health and Safety Volunteers.

If you would like to be part of this fantastic event that promises to benefit many charities and good causes throughout the West of Ireland, contact Ray McNamara at msp@mayococo.ie or call/text 087-6973093 to register your name and area of interest.

Meanwhile, members of Castlebar Chamber including the TF Royal Hotel and Theatre, Breaffy House Resort, Team Horizon, Nyrah Beauty, The Dining Room, Pamex, Anatomy Physiotherapy and Carraig Donn are supporting the event by donating a range of generous prizes.
