A ‘viral’ Mayo GAA photo moment was recreated in New York last week – five years after it was taken.

In May 2019, X (formerly known as Twitter) user Christina posted a photo of three Mayo supporters to the social media site. At the time, the Mayo senior football team were in New York to face The Exiles in the Connacht Championship.

She said at the time: “When I was in the city last week, these three Irishmen asked me to take a photo of them, but none of them had phones.”

The trio reliably informed Christina: “You’ll take the picture and we’ll find it someday.”

She added; “So if by some strange turn of events anyone knows these guys, here’s their photo.”

Thanks to the power of the Internet it took just one hour for all three men, all staunch Mayo GAA supporters in the city for the big game, to be identified. They were Seán Tighe, Bernie Waldron and John Devanney from Ballyhaunis.

Five years on the photo was recreated at the same location, this time featuring the original photographer Christina, who was over the moon to meet the trio once more.

“When I was in the city 5 years ago, I took a photo I never planned on posting of 3 Irishmen. When I did, it took an hour for someone to ID them.”

“When I was in the city Saturday, with the help of the person to ID them, we met in the same spot. I can’t express the joy of this day.”
