Safety measures sought after second accident at bridge in five months
Cllr John O'Hara called for more advance warning signs for drivers approaching the bridge.
A second road traffic accident in five months at Rathkip Bridge in Ballina has prompted calls for additional warning signs to alert motorists to potential danger.
Cllr John O’Hara raised the issue at the October meeting of Ballina Municipal District and called for signs warning of a dangerous bend to be put up on the approach to the bridge.
He said a man had been hospitalised following the latest collision and the car involved was written off, with a similar situation happening just five months earlier.
“Something has to be done at Rathkip because two accidents in five months is too much," he said.
Mayo County Council's senior executive engineer Theresa Durkin said the council would re-examine the bridge. She explained that when the issue was previously raised, the council had cut back hedges and put up signage.
However, she said the council would look at the bridge again, noting Cllr O’Hara’s suggestion that more advanced warning signs should be installed on the approach to the bridge.
Ms Durkin added that the “speed of the vehicles seems to be the issue”.
