A couple, who had just gotten engaged on a Mayo beach, had to alert the emergency rescue services when they got into difficulty.

On Monday afternoon, the Irish Coast Guard was alerted to the couple who had been cut off by the tide at Keel Beach in Achill. The couple had just gotten engaged at the scenic Mayo location.

The MRSC at Malin Head tasked the Achill Coast Guard Unit (CGU), and the Sligo based Coast Guard helicopter R118 to the scene where the couple were cut off by the tide and stranded on a small beach area against a cliff face with a rising tide.

Neither R118 nor boat unit could access the casualties, hence they were rescued by the Achill CGU cliff team.

The rescue climber descended approx. 150m to the casualties, rescuing them to the cliff top.
