Upgrades planned for Mayo's Great Western Greenway

Millions of euros have been spent on a number of upgrades along the Great Western Greenway by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) in recent years with continuing maintenance works ongoing, a meeting of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District heard.
Mayo County Council engineering staff advised members that in recent times a number of staggered gates have been introduced along various sections, two sections at Attireesh in Westport have been resurfaced while fencing upgrades and junction line-marking works are commencing in October. Meanwhile, works on the Attireesh greenway link over to the N5 underpass are set to commence this month with completion expected in December, while continuing works from the underpass onto the link going to Newport should also commence this year with completion expected in the second quarter of 2026.
Welcoming the takeover of greenways nationally by TII, Cathaoirleach Cllr Peter Flynn said TII had spent close to €7 million on the Great Western Greenway in recent years.
“Mayo County Council could only provide a budget of around €100,000 prior to TII taking over responsibility and the greenway was in very serious decline. TII have spent a huge amount in this county and we would never have come up with this if the council was still dealing with it all.”
