'Unfinished' estate in Mayo town to be completed

Councillors in the Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District have agreed to a Material Contravention of the County Development Plan to allow for the construction of 15 dwelling units at an unfinished housing estate in Ballinrobe.

The proposed development site forms part of Cill O Seighin estate in Ballinrobe where planning permission for 85 houses was initially granted in 2004, of which 68 were constructed.

However, the land the proposed development is located on was zoned ‘Strategic Residential Tier 1’ in the latest County Development Plan and these lands are not currently considered for multi-unit residential development.

Council planners recommended that Material Contravention measures be instigated in order to help address the current housing need in Ballinrobe and to complete the existing housing development, which is considered to be in a well-connected residential location within the town. Head of the MD Padraig Flanagan said it would the Council’s recommendation that planning is granted.

Cllr Michael Burke said he was happy to propose the Material Contravention on the basis there were no submissions or observations made upon the planning application.
