Two Mayo projects set to receive over €11 million in funding

Ballintubber Abbey Culture and Heritage Visitor Centre project will receive funding of just over €5.8 million.

Two Mayo projects in Mayo are set to receive more than €11 million under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF), according to Fine Gael Minister Alan Dillon.

He said Ballyhaunis Community Vision project will benefit from almost €5.3 million, while Ballintubber Abbey Culture and Heritage Visitor Centre project will receive funding of just over €5.8 million.

The Ballyhaunis Community Vision project will comprise of a public library, enterprise hub and a public park.

There will also be pedestrian links developed linking it to the main retail and business centre of the town.

Meanwhile, the Ballintubber Abbey project will involve transforming the derelict ruins of the 800 year old East Wing section of the historic Abbey into a modern three-story Culture and Heritage Visitor Centre.

There are hopes the development will educate, engage and inspire visitors and shine a light on the significant cultural, spiritual and historic nature of Ballintubber Abbey.
