Tributes to Castlebar radio station

The then Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring cuts the ribbon at the official opening of CRC FM studios at Thomas Street, Castlebar, in 2018.

Members of Castlebar Municipal District have congratulated Community Radio Castlebar, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary on the air.

Cllr Blackie Gavin raised the issue at last week's meeting of councillors, noting that the station “does a great job for the local community”, and he wished staff at the station every success in the future, including reporter Francis Brennan who attended at the meeting.

Cllr Ger Deere said he had been involved in founding the station and that it was very positive to see it going from strength to strength as a great community organisation.

Cathaoirleach Cllr Donna Sheridan said 30 years was “a serious achievement and it takes a lot of volunteers and work to get to where they are today".

Cllr Michael Kilcoyne supported the tributes saying: “I was in there one of the days and saw a picture of myself at the opening. I had a full head of hair then.”

Cllr Harry Barrett said the service the station provides is “second to none".

"The experience they provide in terms of everything from production, reporting, local services and giving people the opportunity to engage is just terrific.”

Cllr Cyril Burke said it was not just people in Castlebar town who benefitted from CRC FM as he knew people in rural areas who listen and enjoy it very much.
