There were lengthy queues at petrol stations across the Erris region today.

“We are still filling fuel,” said Gerry Coyle who owns Coyle’s Top/Gala Service station in Belmullet.

“There have been queues a mile down the road,” said the local councillor.

Cllr Coyle said he understands people’s anxiety to fuel their vehicles with petrol and diesel but urged motorists to conserve supplies where possible.

“There have been queues all day along here and I would ask people not to fill up their tanks. Just do what they would normally do to make sure there is fuel for the emergency services. Don’t overfill, this will hopefully settle down in a few days,” he commented.

Petrol pumps across the region and county have been struggling to cope with demand.

There was demand across Erris for petrol and diesel with a large queue also snaking its way down the Shore Road in Belmullet as customers queued at the Circle K in the town.

Lengthy queues have formed at filling station throughout Mayo as fears escalate over the fuel shortage being caused by blocked refineries and depots which have occurred as part of nationwide fuel protests.
