Tributes paid to the 'unsung hero' of Ireland West Airport

The late John Dillon.

Mayo county councillors have paid tribute to the “unsung hero” of Ireland West Airport.

John Dillon, who was one of the original and founding board members of the airport, passed away last month.

The Ballyhaunis native was a renowned businessman whose family travel business, John Dillon & Sons, operated from the East Mayo town for over 100 years.

He was affiliated with the local Chamber of Commerce and was also a former Director at Midwest Radio.

John held the title of airport secretary when the facility in Knock was opened in 1986.

He held the distinction of being the longest-serving board member in history and also was a passenger on the very first scheduled flight into the airport when Ryanair touched down in 1986.

“For many, many years he promoted Knock Airport through difficult times and managed to keep the airport sustainable and viable over all those decades. He is an unsung hero who was a very modest man. He can be extremely proud of his legacy,” said Cllr Gerry Murray at the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council.

“He was dedicated not only to Knock Airport but to the concept of balanced regional development,” Cllr Murray added.

Fine Gael’s Alma Gallagher said John has left a lasting legacy.

"He played a pivotal role in the early days of the airport, joining the board in 1985 and serving alongside the late Monsignor Horan. As the airport’s secretary when it officially opened in 1986, he was a passenger on the first scheduled Ryanair flight into the airport. I'm sure he would have a few sharp words about the current state of the aviation industry and where it stands today. His legacy will continue to be felt by thousands of passengers and the community he so passionately served,” Cllr Gallagher said.
