Warm tributes have been paid to a staff member of Mayo County Council who is to retire after working for the local authority for over four decades.
Housing officer Aidan Mulvihill worked for the council for 42 years and is set to retire later this month. At last week’s meeting of Ballina Municipal District, Cathaoirleach Cllr Michael Loftus offered his thanks to Mr Mulvihill for his 42 years of service to the local authority.
Cllr Joe Faughnan wished his "fellow Knockmore man" well on his retirement.
“You’re leaving here very fresh-faced,” said Cllr Faughnan. “I want to wish you well as a fellow Knockmore man. You’re a good community person as well as a model employee of the council.”
Cllr Mark Duffy said Mr Mulvihill was a good example of someone who acted with professionalism in a high-pressure department.
“Housing has been a high-pressure environment in the last few years and you were there at the coal face.
“You dealt with a lot of difficult situations but you always spoke to people with dignity and with professionalism, that has to be commended.”
Mr Mulvihill thanked all the councillors for their kind words and said the years have flown by.
“All I ever did was the job I was paid to do. I always did my best for Mayo County Council when working with the public. Their impression of me was a reflection of the council.
“In life, we should aspire to inspire before we retire. I hope that I have inspired someone along the way,” he said.
