Traffic study planned for Mayo town

The report will examine traffic issues in the town.

A traffic study will be carried out in Castlebar with two key locations among those coming under the microscope.

Local councillors have previously highlighted the issues being experienced at Gallows Hill and Market Square in the town.

Gallows Hill has been the site of traffic gridlock for decades with traffic lights mooted as a possible solution to the backlog at the busy junction. There have also been calls for better signage at Market Square with cars shooting out from the Dunnes Stores direction and into oncoming traffic despite not having the right of way.

It was previously agreed that after a period of at least one year following the opening of the new N5, a traffic study would be carried out in Castlebar.

In a report, municipal district management said that together with survey works previously carried out under the Castlebar Local Transport Plan, this data will inform potential solutions to help alleviate traffic issues around the town.

Meanwhile, temporary fencing at high-risk areas along the Turlough Greenway will take place this summer.

Castlebar Municipal District members were updated on the works by council management at their final meeting in May.
