Time standing still for landmark Mayo clock

The clock has not been functional for a number of months.

An iconic Mayo timepiece remains out of action and it could be some time before it starts ticking again.

The landmark Clock Tower in Westport has not been functional for a number of months and there is no indication when it will be repaired.

“There is a specialist company that fixes them and a request has gone in from Mayo County Council but we are still waiting for them to come back to us,” local councillor Peter Flynn told the Western People.

The tower has not been a clockwork mechanism for around two decades and is powered electronically.

Cllr Flynn said a failure to maintain an agreement put in place during the days of the town councils means time has stood still for the stone structure.

“It’s my understanding that there was a contract with a company, under the former town council, for its maintenance but from what I can gather that wasn’t maintained by the council and here are the consequences,” claimed Cllr Flynn.

The Clock Tower was first erected in place of an old fountain in 1947 at the end of High Street and the corner of Bridge and Shop Streets. It originally stood in the middle of the road but is now surrounded by a traffic island. The Clock Tower was previously dubbed the ‘Four Faced Liar’ by local wits due to its tendency to display the wrong time.
