Taoiseach 'acknowledges' letter from Ballina councillors

It is proposed to house the international protection applicants a the Twin Trees Hotel in Ballina.
The Taoiseach has acknowledged a letter sent to his office by councillors in the Ballina Municipal District regarding the number of international protection applicants that have been accommodated in the district over the last number of months.
Last month, councillors agreed that correspondence should be sent to the office of An Taoiseach Simon Harris sharing their concerns following the news that asylum seekers were to be accommodated at the Twin Trees Hotel on the Downhill Road. It has been proposed that 120 international protection applicants are to be accommodated at the hotel, which was recently sold to a company that has several other premises where refugees are being housed. The news led to a large public meeting outside the hotel and protests have continued.
At last week's meeting of the municipal district, council official Carmel Murphy said Mr Harris's office had responded acknowledging their letter, but there has been no further correspondence from the Taoiseach addressing the concerns raised by councillors.
