Special event in Cong to commemorate Mayo-born patriot

Cong Moytura Heritage Society will host an event on Sunday next, September 14th, to mark the 70th anniversary of the death of Irish patriot Dr Kathleen Lynn.

Dr Lynn was born at Mullafarry, near Killala, in 1874. Her father was Robert Lynn was a Church of Ireland clergyman. She moved to Cong at the age of 12 before leaving for Dublin to pursue a career in medicine. She graduated with a medical degree in 1899 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1909.

Dr Lynn served as Chief Medical Officer of the Irish Citizen’s Army during the Easter Rising in 1916. She co-founded St Ultan’s Hospital in Dublin for sick children in 1919 and was elected to Dail Éireann in 1923. 

All through her life, Kathleen defied societal expectations and dedicated her life to medicine, politics and public health.

She remains a towering figure in Irish medical and revolutionary history.

The commemoration in Cong will commence at 7pm with a visit to the Dr Kathleen Lynn Memorial Garden, which is located beside the public car park. Weather permitting, there will be a short presentation by a representative from the Cong Tidy Town committee.

Dr Yvonne McDermott, from ATU Mayo, will deliver a lecture on Dr Lynn at 8pm in the Crossroads Community Centre, Cong (F31 PY97).
