Slow progress on bus shelter for Mayo town

A local councillor has urged for rapid progress to be made on a bus shelter for Kilkelly.

Cllr John Caulfield said those waiting to take public transport "don’t have the luxury" of any kind of safety while waiting for a bus at Kilkelly, where buses stop along the busy N17 to collect passengers.

A response to Cllr Caulfield said it would be the third quarter of 2025 before progress is made.

“Do they appreciate the urgency with this?” he told last week's meeting of Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District. “This is an accident waiting to happen at a location people need to use every day to get to appointments at hospitals around the country.”

Cllr Paul Lawless said it was wrong to tell people to use public transport and then have them wait on a dangerous roadside.

Senior engineer Conrad Harley said this was a more complicated project because it would require a bus stop, bus shelter, turning circle and a car park. The project will take time as it will require planning permission and approval from An Bord Pleanála.
