Signage needed on 'dangerous' stretch of road

Cllr Patsy O'Brien has called for signage between Carnacon and Ballygarries.

Additional signage is urgently needed at a dangerous stretch of road in South Mayo, a local councillor has insisted.

Independent Cllr Patsy O’Brien told a meeting of Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District Council that works are needed on the L1607 between Ballygarries and Carnacon. He explained there is a part of the road with no verge and a detailed survey had found a significant drop. Warning signs were also removed from the area.

“There was an accident there recently where a tractor went off the road,” he said. “Luckily enough, it did not go fully down but there is 19-foot of water in that particular area.”

Cllr O’Brien asked for some signage to warn road users about the potential danger on what he described as a relatively short stretch.

“I would say it is one of the most dangerous parts of road in the county,” he added.

Cllr Michael Burke supported the call and said some secondary and local roads are very dangerous.

“Signage is awfully important, not that it will always save the day if there is an accident but we have to try and do a little bit better on signage,” he said. “It is disgraceful that anyone would take a sign down or turn a sign around.”

Cllr John Cribbin said he believes a lack of signage on local roads in the Ballyhaunis area is contributing to accidents.
