Mayo publican takes on charity challenge
Castlebar publican Adrian Coady is raising money for charity through his daily walks.
A well-known Mayo publican is taking on a charity challenge to raise funds for the Jack and Jill Foundation.
82-year old Adrian Coady will walk 100km during the month of September in aid of the children’s foundation.
The Castlebar pub owner is joining his local Life Pharmacy team to help support more than 500 families from across Ireland who are caring for children with severe learning disabilities, often associated with very complex medical needs.
Every €20 raised will fund one hour of in-home nursing and respite care. One hour that gives families the chance to rest, recharge or simply spend time together, knowing their child is being cared for by a Jack and Jill nurse or carer.
Adrian has already raised more than €650 and has no plans on slowing down.
“I would try and get out walking every day anyway. It’s good for your health and it’s good for your head,” said Adrian, who is a familiar figure on his walks around Castlebar in all kinds of weather.
“It was my son Jarlath who put the idea in my head. He said you are out walking all the time so you are well to do it,” he added.
The owner of Coady’s pub on Linenhall Street lost his brother Liam and his father to heart attacks and is combining staying healthy with raising funds for a worthwhile cause.
His daily loop which takes in Snugboro and Garryduff boasts a few unenviable hills with Adrian also a regular sight around picturesque Lough Lannagh.
“I just put the head down and do it,” laughed Adrian.
He regularly clocks in 8km to 10km per day and will easily achieve his 100km target by the end of September, which is not bad at all for a man who has entered his ninth decade.
