Safety survey to be carried out at Ballina estate

Safety surveys are to be carried out in a Ballina estate on foot of concerns raised by residents regarding the speed of vehicles in the area.

At last week's meeting of Ballina Municipal District, Cllr Marie-Therese Duffy called on Mayo County Council to carry out a safety assessment of Rehins Fort and to install relevant safety measures, including road markings and speed ramps to make the estate safer for residents and visitors.

She said residents have been looking for improved safety measures at the estate on the Foxford Road for some time.

In a written reply, engineer Declan Ginnelly said he would arrange to have a traffic speed survey undertaken along the entrance road to Rehins Fort in order to assess actual vehicular speeds. He said the entrance roadway would benefit from additional warning signage and centre-line markings, noting Notice of Motion funding will be required for all associated costs. Mr Ginnelly also advised that a special speed limit of 30km/hr currently exists in Rehins Fort to enhance road safety for residents and pedestrians.
