Sadness at passing of popular Mayo GAA official

John Gibbons was a former chairman of the West Board and well-known in GAA circles right across the county.

There is widespread sadness at the passing of one of Mayo GAA’s best-known servants.

John Gibbons, from Cregganroe in Louisburgh, passed away on May Day, Friday, May 1st, at The Mayo Hospice in Castlebar, surrounded by his loving family.

John was a former chairman of West Mayo GAA Board and a most recognisable and popular figure for his matchday duties at MacHale Park in Castlebar and at games right across the county.

A regular voice at Mayo GAA County Board meetings, John was unafraid to give an honest opinion and was hugely respected for doing so.

Born in 1958, John will be sadly missed and remembered with love by his daughters Patricia and Breta and their mother Bernie, sisters and brothers James, Patrick, Michael, Mary, Ann, Nora, Thomas, Martin and Claire, his grandchildren, sons-in-law Michael and Derek, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, former work colleagues at AbbVie, Cairde Clan Mór GAA, and a large circle of friends.

He was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Nancy (née Burke) and his sister Evelyn.

John will rest in repose at Sweeney’s Funeral Home, Louisburgh on Monday, May 4 from 5pm, concluding with vigil prayers at 7pm. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at St Patrick’s Church, Louisburgh on Tuesday at 12 noon, followed by interment in Kilgeever Cemetery.

May he rest in peace.
