Respects paid at Mayo county council meeting

The meeting was adjourned early as a mark of respect.

The monthly meeting of Mayo County Council was adjourned early as a mark of respect following two recent bereavements.

The meeting was adjourned as a mark of respect following the passing of Una Caulfield, the mother of Fianna Fail councillor John Caulfield and Sean Barry, the father-in-law of Mayo County Council Chief Executive, Kevin Kelly.

Mrs Caulfield, aged 93, was laid to rest in Kilmovee on Tuesday.

County councillors expressed their deepest sympathies to both families at last week’s meeting of the local authority.

Tributes were also paid to the late Michael ‘Bunny’ Boland.

The former auctioneer and publican was a hugely popular businessman and dedicated community figure.

Cllr Annie May Reape praised his efforts in his community. “He was known as such a hard worker,” said Cllr Reape.

“He was involved in everything,” added Cllr John O’Hara.

Mr Boland was laid to rest in Leigue Cemtery last Monday following requiem mass in St Muredach's Cathedral.

He was described as "one of life's true gentlemen" who "helped and touched the lives of many" in online tributes following his passing.
