Protest taking place over new Greenway proposal in Murrisk

Local landowners have been left unhappy with the manner in which the Murrisk Greenway project is being handled.
A protest takes place in Westport this weekend involving landowners left disgruntled by Greenway plans.
The Rural Ireland Organisation (RIO) has warned Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and Mayo County Council that the treatment of landowners in the Murrisk area of Westport over a proposed Greenway is ‘an absolute disgrace and will not be tolerated.’ Leader of RIO Gerry Loftus said ‘so called’ consulation meetings have fallen short.
He said a meeting in September saw no landowner officially notified and a February meeting was the same. Mr Loftus stated he attended the February meeting and all it amounted to was TII outlining to landowners where the Greenway would be constructed.
“They had a computer generated outline of their proposal for this Greenway that starts in the townland of Oughaval and runs down into a valley, goes through a wetland that floods anytime their is heavy rainfall. Then it goes through a Natural Woodland through the townland of Cloonagh and heads towards Murrisk. You would just have to see this route to see how absolutely ridiculous it is," he commented.
A protest will take place at the Monument in Westport at 2.30pm on Saturday March 9. Mr Loftus is encouraging all landowners to attend and make their feelings known on the matter.
